Shapes in Design

Domain names A shape is one of the core elements used in creating any form of graphic design. Be it a triangle, a square, a circle… the options are abundant and they are the basic structures that form a logo, website design, brochure layout and many other elements within art and design.

Utilising a Shape

Using shapes in graphic design correctly is one of the foundations of a successful project. Along with typography, both shape and colour will set the basis of a mood and message. Yello Studio, based in Devon, utilise shapes as a starting point in any project. Initial meetings may include questions about ‘what shape do you see your company as’ and ‘what colour is your company?’. Even if there is no branding in place, you may have a subconscious idea about what shape your business portrays and how it should be perceived.  For example, a soft, curved and rounded shape will be perceived in a different way to a sharp structured shape.

Negative Space

Clever use of ‘white’ or ‘negative’ space in or around shapes will also determine a mood, shape or structure. Thinking 'outside of the shape benefits design in all aspects, including logo’s, brochure’s, websites and marketing.
